Lots of people think Standardbreds cannot canter, they are wrong. As Charlene has said in another thread the pace is a gait in addition to walk trot canter and gallop.
I believe the canter is not something that can just be expected. Imagine being told the run really fast backwards, you would fall over and trip lots until you have created enough muscles and balance for it. You need to WORK for it. My standardbred still does not fully canter balanced.
I found dressage lessons super helpful, the pace involves a lot of under muscles and is flat and quick, as where the canter is a more verticle gait involving contraction of the horses abs and more topline muscles. Also trot and canter poles super helpful to get the to lift through their back.
Doees anyone else have tips or questions about getting the canter? I do need to repeat this is a long process and cannot be expected.
